In an attempt to focus more on mobile users, Facebook is teaming up with DeviceAnywhere to ensure its mobile applications are optimized for specific handsets.

In an attempt to focus more on mobile users, Facebook is teaming up with DeviceAnywhere to ensure its mobile applications are optimized for specific handsets.

DeviceAnywhere is an SaaS platform that allows application developers and device manufacturers to test software on a variety of handsets from more than 30 mobile operators throughout the world.

Facebook has already had some success with its mobile applications, as the iPhone Facebook app is often on the App Store‘s most-downloaded list. Now Facebook is hoping to have that kind of luck with other smartphones.

“Although many companies offer mobile sites or applications for their consumers on-the-go, Facebook is taking it a step further by developing multiple applications that are customized to a user’s device,” DeviceAnywhere CEO Faraz Syed said. “Not only does this require testing an enormous amount of handsets, but also on carriers and networks on a global scale.”

Almost 20 million users access MySpace through a cellphone, causing the company to look at the mobile market as a strong growth avenue that could be monetized with relevant ads. However, neither Facebook nor MySpace have been able to significantly monetize its mobile users. The fact that neither company has strong location integration – a strong facet for other mobile social networks like Loopt, Brightkite and MocoSpace – could be the reason why.

MySpace is no doubt getting its butt kicked on the desktop by rival Facebook, but the former heavyweight champ is taking the fight to a mobile device near you.

MySpace is no doubt getting its butt kicked on the desktop by rival Facebook, but the former heavyweight champ is taking the fight to a mobile device near you. According to Mobile Marketing Watch, “MySpace is reporting that its mobile usage increased nearly 500 perent last year, with users ‘now generating 7 billion mobile page views per month.’”

What’s driving the growth? Applications, apparently. According to MySpace vice president and general manager of mobile operations John Faith, who spoke at the Nokia Developer Summit in Monte Carlo, in the last year, “MySpace went from less than 10 percent of its mobile traffic originating from mobile applications (vs. the mobile web) to approximately 35 percent.”

All impressive, but maybe most interesting is the estimate that 50 percent of all MySpace traffic “within the next few years,” will be mobile. Not sure what “next few years” means, but it sounds sooner rather than later.

Facebook, however, is likely on a similar path. We noted in Feb. 2009 that 13 percent of all FB traffic was via mobile. And that number has likely gone up since then.

As social networking sites gain traction with recruiting, the mobile component cannot be ignored.

MySpace mobile is redesigned with added features. Will it matter?

With the number of people headed to social networks on their mobile increasing, MySpace is looking to give users added reason to connect with a recent redesign.

According to a recent e-mail message, the redesign makes MySpace Mobile “faster and easier” to use than ever. New or enhanced features include text alerts, photo uploads and video. Here’s more:

Update Your Status by SMS – Update your status by texting it to MYSPC (69772) and your status is instantly updated on MySpace!

Text Alerts – Get free instant text messages sent to your phone whenever you receive new MySpace messages, comments or friend requests.

Photo Uploads – Want to instantly send photos from your phone to MySpace? MySpace makes it easy. Here’s how.

Video – Now you can view videos on m.myspace.com. Here’s how.

Of course, some of these only work on select phones.

With MySpace losing the desktop war to Facebook, it’ll be interesting to see if they can fight them off via mobile devices. If you believe the social network with the most people actively using the site wins, then MySpace is dead on any device.

How many employees check Facebook from their phones in order to avoid getting caught surfing on company time? It's a trend that's likely to impact job searching as well.

Crunchgear is reporting the growing importance of mobile devices to social networking giant Facebook. “Facebook strategists clearly see the potential for growth in the mobile sector, seeing as 13 percent of their users log in from their phones.”

With the likelihood that traditional desktop growth opportunities are slowing for Facebook, this is no surprise. Personally, about half my Facebook usage is now mobile.

It’s interesting to note that as more and more employers are blocking Facebook – and other sites of their ilk – that employees are accessing such sites from the phones. Take that, boss! It’s a trend that’s likely to impact job search as well, as a growing number of employers crack down on career destinations.

I fully expect future phone purchases to have direct access to Facebook. Maybe it’ll be just like the Internet Explorer icon that’s present on just about every PC bought today. And it makes sense: The company has done a great job providing mobile-friendly Web sites for a wide variety of devices. The article points to deals with Palm and Nokia, but the race is certainly on for domination of the mobile “desktop.”

And no surprise the article touches on MySpace, saying “We’ve also heard that MySpace might be announcing support for Nokia and Palm phones (which wouldn’t be surprising given that its CEO is giving the event’s keynote).”

A new application on Facebook allows job seekers to get an insider's view of a company before accepting an offer.

A new application on the social networking site Facebook is allowing users to seek out companies that match their culture and values.

The OfficeBook application, created by the three people at Leaders 2020 Inc. who were frustrated by the inability of job seekers to uncover company culture through traditional means of job searching, has begun a fan club of about 500 users on Facebook since its debut last month.

Users can anonymously express their feelings about a company or research what others have said in order to find the best cultural fit.

“With over 50 percent of Facebook’s users aged 30+ and seeking useful applications, we decided that OfficeBook should go live there,” co-founder and CEO Sundar Vanchinathan said. “We have been live for one month now and the response has been terrific. Over 960 views from all over the world, about 500 users, and over 6,500 page views.”

So why is measuring a company’s culture so important for the job seeker?

“[All three of us] have spent the last 15+ years working in Silicon Valley,” Vanchinathan said. “Over time, we realized that the most productive and successful companies are ones where every employee feels valued for who they are and what they believe in.”

The application can be found at http://apps.facebook.com/office-book.
