San Diego Nurse Jobs for LVNs

There will be plenty of San Diego nurse jobs for licensed vocational nurses in the coming years.

Licensed vocational nurses are responsible for providing basic nursing care for sick, injured, convalescing, elderly, and physically or mentally disables people. LVNs typically work as part of a team and under the direction of a physician or registered nurse.

The general day-to-day duties of an LVN includes observing patients, checking vital signs, performing basic assessments, and reporting and documenting and changes in a patient’s condition. They may be expected to work a variety of shifts, including nights and weekends.

In order to become an LVN, you must first obtain a license to practice from the California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians. You will be required to meet specific educational requirements, undergo a fingerprint check and pass the National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses.

According to the California Employment Development Department, there will be plenty of employment opportunities in a variety of settings for LVNs in the San Diego area during the near future. In addition, LVNs can expect to be paid high wages for their work.

Employment in San Diego County is expected to increase from 5,290 workers during 2006 to 5,780 workers by 2016, accounting for 490 additional jobs and an overall growth rate of 9.3 percent. Employment throughout California should grow from 57,700 jobs to 67,800 jobs during that time, resulting in 10,100 additional jobs and an increase of 17.5 percent.

LVNs can choose to work in a variety of healthcare-related settings, including: hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, nursing and long-term care facilities, ambulatory surgical centers, emergency medical centers, private homes and group homes.

During 2010, the median salary for LVNs in San Diego County was $47,797 per year, while the low wage was $42,722 per year and the high wage was $53,136 per hour. The median salary throughout California was $49,818 per year, while the low wage was $42,677 per year and the high wage was $57,947 per year.
