When a patient is undergoing treatment for cancer, there are typically a number of medical professionals assigned to that individual’s radiation oncology team. These employees work together in an effort to diagnose and treat the cancer.
According to the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the typical members of a radiation oncology team include:
- Radiation oncologist – This is the main physician responsible for a patient’s cancer treatment. After evaluating the patient, reviewing tests, and talking to the patient’s other doctors, the radiation oncologist organizes and oversees all aspects of the patient’s radiation therapy. They monitor the patient’s condition and identify and treat any side effects during the course of the treatment.
- Radiation oncology nurse – This nurse is responsible for teaching a patient about the side effects of radiation therapy and monitoring their progress during the course of treatment. They often act as a point of contact between the patient and radiation oncologist in order to make sure the treatment is going smoothly.
- Medical physicist – This highly-trained, highly-skilled physicist works with the radiation oncologist to plan a course of action for the patient’s treatment. They maintain radiation therapy equipment and make sure that all courses of treatment are accurate and efficient.
- Medical dosimetrist – This highly-skilled employee works with both the radiation oncologist and medical physicist to deploy a patient’s course of treatment. They are mainly responsible for electronically calculating the exact amount of radiation that should be given to a patient.
- Radiation therapist – This therapist works alongside the radiation oncologist to operate internal and external radiation therapy equipment. They are responsible for making sure equipment runs accurately and efficiently and may help to monitor the patient’s condition during the course of treatment.
