A new alternative school will help create jobs in Ft Lauderdale and increase the local graduation rate.
Mavericks in Education Florida recently announced that the company will open a Mavericks High School in Broward County this year. The tuition-free school will operated as part of the Broward County Public Schools system and marks the fifth Mavericks High School in Florida.
About 25 teachers and staff members will be hired to work at the new school starting this fall. Keep in mind that your potential employer will most likely check out your criminal background. During it’s first year of operation, the school will be able to house up to 400 students in each of its two daily sessions, and online enrollment is available now.
Mavericks High School is meant to offer students an alternative to traditional schools by focusing on “out-of-the-box” approaches to education. The overall goal is to increase graduation rates and offer students who are not succeeding in regular school with an alternative setting and approach to be successful.
The school offers students individualized learning that allows them to work at private computer terminals at their own pace. Mavericks High School will feature the latest in computer-based learning technology and courses will be directed by state-certified teachers.
“Our approach is three-fold,” Frank Biden, board member of Mavericks in Education Florida, said. “First and foremost we want all of our students to receive a state-recognized high school diploma by passing the FCAT and earning the required 24 credits. Second, we will be providing students with employment preparation skills and helping them find jobs; and third, we will make sure each student has a plan for continuing education, college, trade school, military or full-time employment.”
