RIM Outperforms Apple

Monday, August 17th, 2009

The top contender on this year’s list of Fortune‘s Fastest Growing Companies may surprise you.

Research in Motion was ranked number one on the list, with a three-year average earnings-per-share growth of 84 percent and revenue growth of 77 percent. Shares of RIM have a three-year annual total return of 45 percent.

Apple, which is three times the size of RIM in sales and market value, only came in at number 39 on the list. In fact, IDC recently reported that the bestselling smartphone in America so far this year by units is not the iPhone, but the BlackBerry Curve, which is made by RIM.

RIM has a 56 percent share of the $12 billion U.S. smartphone market. During the past 10 years, the company has sold about 65 million phones to its 28.5 million subscribers, increasing its stock market capitalization from $96 million to $42 billion.

Even though the BlackBerry was once considered a business tool, it has made large gains as a consumer product, and now appeals to many markets and age groups. During Q4 2008, 80 percent of the company’s new subscribers came from the non-business crowd, which could have something to do with the company launching its first television campaign targeting a mass audience at the same time.

Microsoft to Team Up with Nokia

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Microsoft Corp is expected to announce today that it will team up with Nokia in order to feature its Office suite on several of the company’s mobile devices.

The two companies have often been considered rivals in the cellphone industry, with Nokia operating Symbian software instead of Windows Mobile. However, both companies could benefit from the partnership, as both are working hard to cope with increasingly competitive industries.

Nokia, which is the world’s largest cellphone maker, is struggling in the smartphone market against rivals such as the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android.

Many think the partnership is a direct shot at Google, which offers its own Office-similar suite of e-mail, writing, graphing and presenting tools online and mobile devices. Microsoft is set to release its latest version of Office next year, including an online version that will allow users to access Word, Excel and PowerPoint over the Internet.

T-Mobile to Release myTouch 3G

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

T-Mobile is planning to release the myTouch 3G, its second Android-powered phone, this August.

This time around, the phone will have a strong emphasis on personalization. The handset is based on the touchscreen HTC Magic, but T-Mobile has added several hardware and software changes. The phone will be available with multiple shell cases with different designs.

The phone will have a Microsoft Exchange client that will allow users to receive corporate e-mail and calenders while on the go. The phone also will come preloaded with the Sherpa application, a location-based program that customizes itself to the user’s preferences and recommends nearby shops, restaurants and other locations.

The myTouch 3G also will come with an App pack that will give users recommendations for other programs in the Android market.

The touch-screen handset is powered by Android 1.5, which includes an onscreen keyboard and video-recording capabilities. The phone has integrated Wi-Fi and EDGE and can use T-Mobile’s 3G network. The phone also has Bluetooth and GPS, as well as integration with Google‘s Web services, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps and YouTube.

The myTouch 3G will be available for $199 with a two-year contract, putting it in direct competition with AT&T‘s iPhone 3GS.

mJob iPhone App Launches

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

We’re proud to announce the birth of our iPhone application, which went live on Sunday, July 5th. It’s the culmination of a lot of work and commitment by a small team of passionate people. And we think it’s the first step in developing something special in the online employment space and mobile recruiting.

mjob-app-screenshot

Users can search through listings by keyword and location. Unlike some apps that use something like job board APIs, we don’t send you to a mobile-unfriendly site, so the whole experience is hopefully consistent. Users can e-mail themselves jobs they like and go through the whole applicant tracking process from a desktop computer.

By the end of the year, we hope to add functionality that’s already on the drawing board. We’ll also learn from our analytics and user behavior to make improvements. This addition of an iPhone app also helps mJob clients get their job content onto the fastest growing mobile device on the planet.

We’re under no illusion here at mJob that we have don’t a long way to go in making this journey complete. User feedback, as always, will be important, and you can’t get that if you don’t get on the field in the first place. Step one is just getting into the game. We’ll get better from there. And well, hell, it’s just fun to be on the iPhone.

BLS: 5.4 Candidates for Every Job Opening

Monday, June 15th, 2009

A new report demonstrates just how competitive the job market has become. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported there were 5.4 job seekers for every employment opening in April.

That’s up from 4.8 workers for every position in March and 1.7 workers in December 2007.

“While recent labor market reports have indicated that the pace of job loss is slowing, new jobs are not yet being created, and unemployed workers are facing an increasingly uphill battle in the search for work,” Heidi Shierholz, an economist with the Economic Policy Institute, told BizJournals.com.

New Mobile iGoogle for Smartphones

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Google has released a new version of iGoogle for the iPhone and Android phones.

“This new version is faster and easier to use,” a company spokesperson said. “It supports tabs as well as more of your favorite gadgets, including those built by third-party developers … One of our favorite new features is the in-line display of articles for feed-based gadgets. That means you can read article summaries without leaving the page. You can also rearrange gadget order or keep your favorite gadgets open for your next visit.”

Google previously released an iGoogle interface optimized for iPhone in 2008, but it discontinued that version a year later.

“We’ve decided to direct iPhone users to the standard mobile iGoogle page,” the company said at that time. “We’ve found that people hit iGoogle from lots of different phones – we want to ensure you’ll all see the same version.”

However, the regular mobile interface is basic and only able to show feeds and a small number of gadgets. The mobile iGoogle doesn’t have tabs and is optimized for WAP phones instead of smartphones.

To access the new version of iGoogle, go to iGoogle.com on your iPhone or Android phone and click on “Try the new Mobile iGoogle.” Google won’t allow you to switch to the new version, so bookmark the page in order to access it in the future.

Android to Power Netbooks

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

The rumors that Google’s Android is expanding beyond mobile phones finally have some clout.

Acer Inc. has announced that it will release the Aspire One netbook, a low-cost notebook featuring Android, during Q3. The Android model will be less expensive than the Windows XP model, even though the two have the same electronic compartments. Asustek Computer Inc., which created the netbook, also has developed a model that runs on Android.

These developments show that the Android software is powerful enough to replace Windows, which currently runs about 90 percent of the world’s personal computers. Calvin Huang, an analyst at Daiwa Securities Group Inc., told Bloomberg that this puts Google in a position to compete with Microsoft, which is preparing to introduce Windows 7.

“This is a negative and may force Microsoft to lower the price of Windows 7,” he said. “More and more vendors are adopting Android and non-Windows in their products, so this is a very good chance for Android to penetrate the PC market.”

Officials in the marketplace think the competition will be good and will allow users a choice as to what’s best for them.
