City of Houston Jobs Take on Green Challenge

The City of Houston and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability will launch the first annual Green Office Challenge on October 15th. The challenge will offer training and resources to anyone who owns or resides in a local building in an effort to reduce energy consumption, waste generation, and water use.

As part of the challenge, the city will offer free workshops and training with local, state, and national sustainability experts so businesses and property owners can learn about both introductory and high-performance green building practices through free workshops and training.

Jobs in Seattle Saved by Union Agreements

A new agreement between the city and its unions could help save thousands of jobs in Seattle.

The City of Seattle has reached an agreement with the Coalition of City Unions that will ultimately save taxpayer money and prevent unnecessary layoffs. The new agreement will allow both parties to open previously closed agreements that could positively affect 6,000 city workers when ratified.

Under the agreement, union employees will accept a .6 percent cost of living increase beginning in January 2011, which is lower than the 2 percent minimum increase. The agreement also extends labor contracts through December 2013 and allows for wage increases in 2012 and 2013.

VisionGate, Inc. recently announced that it will relocate from Seattle to Phoenix. The company plans to bring along several high-wage jobs and future employment opportunities, as well as state-of-the-art technology, as it opens the world’s first biomedical 3D cellular imaging lab.

Ft Lauderdale Jobs Created by New School

A new alternative school will help create jobs in Ft Lauderdale and increase the local graduation rate.

Mavericks in Education Florida recently announced that the company will open a Mavericks High School in Broward County this year. The tuition-free school will operated as part of the Broward County Public Schools system and marks the fifth Mavericks High School in Florida.

About 25 teachers and staff members will be hired to work at the new school starting this fall. Keep in mind that your potential employer will most likely check out your criminal background. During it’s first year of operation, the school will be able to house up to 400 students in each of its two daily sessions, and online enrollment is available now.
