50% of MySpace Traffic Will Be Mobile

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

MySpace is no doubt getting its butt kicked on the desktop by rival Facebook, but the former heavyweight champ is taking the fight to a mobile device near you. According to Mobile Marketing Watch, “MySpace is reporting that its mobile usage increased nearly 500 perent last year, with users ‘now generating 7 billion mobile page views per month.’”

What’s driving the growth? Applications, apparently. According to MySpace vice president and general manager of mobile operations John Faith, who spoke at the Nokia Developer Summit in Monte Carlo, in the last year, “MySpace went from less than 10 percent of its mobile traffic originating from mobile applications (vs. the mobile web) to approximately 35 percent.”

All impressive, but maybe most interesting is the estimate that 50 percent of all MySpace traffic “within the next few years,” will be mobile. Not sure what “next few years” means, but it sounds sooner rather than later.

Facebook, however, is likely on a similar path. We noted in Feb. 2009 that 13 percent of all FB traffic was via mobile. And that number has likely gone up since then.

As social networking sites gain traction with recruiting, the mobile component cannot be ignored.

Companies Implementing Android

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Many companies, including Acer, are working on implementing Android into different devices.

Acer is working on several different devices that use Google’s Android operating system and software and the company is planning to launch a smartphone that uses the software later this year.

“The entire industry is looking at Android,” Gianfranco Lanci, Acer president and CEO, recently said at the company’s first-quarter investor’s conference. “We are testing Android on a lot of different solutions. We are working on an Android solution for the smartphone, [but] I think it’s too early to say if we’re going to see Android on a netbook in the near future.”

Lanci said Android is good for communication and Web access, but isn’t sure if it’s right for traditional PCs. He said a smartphone with the software makes more sense than having it on a netbook.

T-Mobile was the first mobile network operator to launch an Android handset, the G1, and sold a million of the smartphones in the first six months it was on the market. However, this is less than the number of iPhones sold in the same time period.

Several more Android smartphones are in the works, including more from High Tech Computer, the G1 developer, one from Samsung Electronics and two from Far EasTone, a mobile network operator in Taiwan.

The netbook market for Android is largely untapped. Hewlett-Packard confirmed earlier this year that it had been testing Android on netbooks and Guangzhou Skytone Transmission Technologies, based in China, has said its Android netbook is undergoing final testing before it launches.

Kenexa Employee Opinion Study

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Kenexa, a provider of recruitment and retention solutions, revealed results of the Kenexa Research Institute’s (KRI) recent employee opinion study for the UK.

The results indicate that the UK is behind India, the USA, Canada, Russia, Germany and Spain when it comes to country-level employee engagement index scores but it is ahead of France, Italy and Japan.

The data come from an analysis of the WorkTrends database, an annual survey of more than 25,000 employees in 18 countries.

The research examines the impact of employee engagement, the factors that drive engagement higher and what employees want from their managers.

Engagement contributes to increased job satisfaction, employee retention, advocacy and pride, all of which can have a positive impact on an organization’s culture. However, the employee engagement index score for UK employees is only 54%.

“The factors that impede engagement are an employee’s sense of the lack of a promising future in the organization, their work contributions going unrecognized and being surrounded by unmotivated co-workers,” said Jack Wiley, executive director, Kenexa Research Institute.

“Without engagement, the manager’s job is much harder because it involves pulling the team along, rather than guiding individuals. To improve their engagement levels, UK organizations should develop the skills of their managers and put more emphasis on talent management and creating defined career paths.”

According to the survey, UK employees want exciting work, an organization that can offer them a promising future, work/life balance, a safe environment, and an opportunity to improve their skills.

“Excitement relates to the work itself, the people involved and the extent to which employees can meet their career goals,” said Dr Wiley.

The research also highlights steps that managers can take to improve employee engagement and the effectiveness of their teams.

These include: treating employees fairly; keeping commitments; evaluating performance fairly; implementing useful suggestions; resolving problems quickly; communicating openly; having confidence in senior leaders; discussing ethical issues without negative consequences; having a promising future; and providing satisfactory recognition.

“Never underestimate the impact that a manager has on his/her team’s level of engagement,” said Dr Wiley. “Managers are the face of the organization for employees and proper management practices lead to a more engaged workforce.”

The research provides a breakdown of engagement levels by job type.

The UK figures show that 59% of senior and middle managers are engaged, ahead of professional/technical staff (57%), sales staff (55%), clerical staff (54%), supervisors (51%) and service/production staff (45%).

“To succeed, organizations need a strong financial standing and business strategy, solid growth potential, a clear vision, a set of values, well-aligned goals, satisfied customers and skillful talent,” said Dr Wiley. “When you add engagement to that mix, you can really start to achieve high performance.”

Mobile Advertising to Increase

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

One research company is predicting that mobile and social network advertising will substantially increase during the near future.

Amidst its recent conference, Forrester Research released its projections for the growth of online advertising. The company found that mobile and social networks will have the best areas of growth, although all online sectors are showing strong growth potential.

The company predicts the overall online advertising growth rate for the six-year period from 2008 to 2014 will be 17 percent. At the same time, mobile advertising is expected to grow 27 percent per year, while social network advertising should grow 34 percent per year.

Android Continuing to Succeed

Monday, April 27th, 2009

The success of Google’s Android is continuing to grow.

AdMob recently released its March network data report, which showed that worldwide requests on the AdMob network increased by 17 percent from February to 7.7 billion. The report also found that Android-based phones are growing, and that 50 percent of all ad requests from iPhone and Android services come from applications.

Android alone represented about 6 percent of the total ad requests on the AdMob network. This makes Android tied with Palm as the number four mobile smartphone operating system in the country, behind iPhone, RIM and Windows Mobile. The G1 came in as the number four smartphone in the country, behind the iPhone, Blackberry Curve and Blackberry Pearl.

In comparison, Android requests have grown 47 percent per month since the product launched, while the iPhone has grown 88 percent per month since the launch of the App Store.

More than half of AdMob’s ad requests for the iPhone and Android came from applications instead of mobile Web pages. Apart from games, there also are movie apps, news apps and sports apps. This means application stores on platforms other than the iPhone have the potential to be very successful and that apps will most likely replace some browser-based activities.

Mobile Marketing Remains Resilient

Monday, April 20th, 2009

We all know that traditional advertising spending has been declining lately, but mobile marketing still seems to be staying afloat.

Advertising such as that seen in newspapers and magazines is quickly becoming outdated. While the current economic recession is partly to blame for this, the increasing popularity of other advertising mediums, such as mobile, have proved to be more cost effective and efficient.

A new report by Juniper Research found that mobile marketing in general is seeing the same amount of investment as it did before the current economic recession began. Many companies with minimal advertising budgets are turning to mobile.

Windsor Holden, principal analyst at Juniper Research, said this could lead the mobile advertising sector to be more widely adopted by markets than it would have without the recession.

“The proportion of ad spend which is going to mobile is definitely increasing,” Holden said.

The recession is causing more and more companies who normally wouldn’t use markets like mobile to turn to new marketing methods in order to stay in the game. While other forms of advertising are becoming old or, in some cases, non-existent, the future of mobile still looks promising.
