4 Billion Mobile Subscribers

Monday, February 16th, 2009

The GSMA, which represents the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry, recently announced that the mobile world has celebrated its four billionth connection, according to Wireless Intelligence, the GSMA’s market intelligence unit. This milestone emphasizes the continued strong growth of the mobile industry and puts the global market on the path to reach a staggering six billion connections by 2013.

The growth is driven by two primary sources: the integration of mobile into previously unconnected devices and subscriber additions in emerging markets.

“As we enter 2009, the world is in the midst of a broad economic slowdown, one that is impacting every facet of business, every link in the communications value chain. To address the significant challenges facing the global economy, the GSMA and its membership are focused on leveraging mobility to create new opportunities and to drive productivity and prosperity,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer of the GSMA. “GSMA industry initiatives in the areas of Mobile Broadband, Mobile Lifestyle and Mobile Planet will help drive this innovation and growth despite the challenges of the global economic downturn.”

All eyes are on exploring ways of sustaining this growth as the Mobile World Congress convenes in Barcelona this week.

The GSMA’s Mobile Broadband initiatives focus on the development of a Mobile Broadband infrastructure and the increase of Internet-connected mobile devices. With the world’s mobile connections now numbering four billion – nearly 100 million of which are Mobile Broadband – and with 1.1 billion fixed broadband lines reaching only one sixth of the world’s population, the opportunities are limitless.

Executives will explore Mobile Broadband uptake, how consumers are adapting, and how Internet services become even more compelling when married with always available Mobile Broadband.

The GSMA’s Mobile Lifestyle initiatives concentrate on the cross-industry creation of innovative services that combine web attributes with mobility to make services, such as banking or entertainment, far more compelling.

Chris DeWolfe, CEO and Co-founder of MySpace will be sharing his perspective on the role of the mobile industry in entertainment at the Mobile Backstage conference, which features both Kevin Spacey and will.i.am. It will also tackle the technical challenges of delivering mobile services and commercial elements influencing mobile industry and entertainment partner collaboration.

The GSMA’s Mobile Planet initiatives leverage mobility to help improve the lives of individuals across the developing world in a socially responsible manner. With countries like India adding 10 million new mobile connections per month, and many users accessing the Internet, email and banking exclusively via mobile devices, the developing world is central to mobile industry growth.

As grid electricity is inaccessible to many emerging market areas, Mobile World Congress will be exploring the use of renewable energy. The GSMA’s Development Fund, that facilitates the delivery of mobile offerings to people living on less than $2 per day, will be presenting the Green Power Pavilion where leading green technology providers will meet with operators.

“Mobile phones have evolved to become broadband-enabled multi-media devices that connect mass markets in mature and emerging markets alike. Mobile World Congress will showcase how the industry will continue to push the boundaries into the mobile future,” said O’Hara.

13% of Facebook Users Login via Mobile

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Crunchgear is reporting the growing importance of mobile devices to social networking giant Facebook. “Facebook strategists clearly see the potential for growth in the mobile sector, seeing as 13 percent of their users log in from their phones.”

With the likelihood that traditional desktop growth opportunities are slowing for Facebook, this is no surprise. Personally, about half my Facebook usage is now mobile.

It’s interesting to note that as more and more employers are blocking Facebook – and other sites of their ilk – that employees are accessing such sites from the phones. Take that, boss! It’s a trend that’s likely to impact job search as well, as a growing number of employers crack down on career destinations.

I fully expect future phone purchases to have direct access to Facebook. Maybe it’ll be just like the Internet Explorer icon that’s present on just about every PC bought today. And it makes sense: The company has done a great job providing mobile-friendly Web sites for a wide variety of devices. The article points to deals with Palm and Nokia, but the race is certainly on for domination of the mobile “desktop.”

And no surprise the article touches on MySpace, saying “We’ve also heard that MySpace might be announcing support for Nokia and Palm phones (which wouldn’t be surprising given that its CEO is giving the event’s keynote).”

Kenexa Named to Forbes’ 25 Fastest-Growing Tech Companies

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Kenexa, a provider of software for retention and talent management, has been declared by Forbes as one of the twenty-five fastest growing tech companies in the U.S.

The company came in tenth place. Included in the rankings were companies like Genentech, Salesforce, and Apple. No surprise here that many of these companies also often surface on ‘best places to work’ lists.

Kenexa’s Chief Executive Officer, Rudy Karsan, said, “Kenexa is honored to be recognized by Forbes and to take its place among noteworthy tech companies such as Google and Apple. We’re focused on strong business fundamentals: developing products that deliver value to our customers and creating a world-class company that attracts high-performing employees. We’re particularly gratified to be ranked tenth for our first year on this prestigious listing.”

To make the list, companies must have latest 12-month revenues of $25 million or more, annualized sales gains of at least 10% over the past five years and a profit over the past 12 months. In addition, Forbes requires a Thomson IBES long-term consensus profit-growth forecast of at least 10%, annualized. They also exclude companies with significant legal problems or with possible accounting or corporate governance issues, based on scoring data from Audit Integrity of Los Angeles.

Sponge Bob Coming to iPhone

Monday, February 9th, 2009

It has zero relevance to mobile recruiting, but who cares? We love Sponge Bob. And we really like that he’s coming to the iPhone.

According to MobileMarketer:

Nickelodeon signaled its entry onto the iPhone platform with a mini-application, “The SpongeBob Tickler,” on Jan. 20. Since its launch The SpongeBob Tickler, developed in partnership with Mobui, leapt into the top 10 best-selling iTunes applications, receiving more than 3,000 downloads per day.

In addition to “Tickler,” Nick will also be launching “Wacky Walk” and “Diner Dash” for Sponge Bob, as well as adding apps for Dora the Explorer and iCarly. My 2-year-old will be so excited.

Diner Dash, will create a portable SpongeBob-themed version of the popular casual game, Diner Dash, set in the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket and other under-the-sea locations. The Wacky Walk application, coming in April, is a platform game that will allow users to tap, swipe, tilt and shake scenery to get obstacles out of SpongeBob’s way.

“The application is an opportunity for Nickelodeon to have a footprint on the iPhone, which offers a unique experience to coincide with each of the shows,” said John Burry CEO of Mobui, New York.

Here’s hoping Patrick gets his own app soon too.

Sendouts Launches Sourcepro Toolbar

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Sendouts, a provider of staffing and recruiting software, has launched the SourcePro Toolbar, a web 2.0 ready add-on for Internet Explorer.

The toolbar allows recruiters to import data such as resumes and profiles from social networking sites and major job boards directly into their Sendouts Pro database. Examples of sites include CareerBuilder, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

When importing candidate records, the toolbar checks for duplicate candidates in the recruiter’s database helping keep their databases clean, current and accurate. It also enables the recruiter to instantly match the new candidates to open jobs in their Sendouts Pro database.

“With so many candidates available on the Internet, a major challenge recruiters face is finding a way to quickly and accurately import those candidate profiles into their recruiting management system,” said Don Breckenridge Jr., president and CEO of Sendouts. “The SourcePro Toolbar automates the importing of these candidate records into Sendouts Pro and matching them to open job orders which saves recruiters a tremendous amount of time.”

mJob Powering Recruiting Nevada Mobile

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Recruiting Nevada, an employment site catering to candidates and companies in, you guessed it, Nevada, has selected mJob as its mobile solution. Now, job seekers in Las Vegas and elsewhere in Nevada, or anyone looking to relocate to the area can now do so on their mobile browser via m.recruitingnevada.com.

“With the current growth trend of smartphones across the country, we’re really excited about taking Recruiting Nevada mobile,” said Doug Geinzer, Director of Online Classified Advertising for Greenspun Interactive/Recruiting Nevada. “Not only does it open a new avenue for us to connect to local job seekers, but it also gives us a whole new suite of products and options to better enhance our customers ability to connect with top talent.”

In addition to providing a mobile presence for the company, Recruiting Nevada will look at additional ways in the future to promote the site, as well as plug employers into the opportunity to connect with wireless users around Nevada and those looking to relocate to the area. Text messaging, for example, is one such project where the two will partner.
