Technology and Healthcare Jobs in Columbus Look Bright

Those looking for a job in Columbus, Ohio may have luck with the city’s technology and healthcare industries, both of which contain some of the area’s highest job prospects.

Columbus‘s economy is largely service-driven, and has many prominent firms – many among the Fortune 1000. The city also is home to many information technology companies, state government, Ohio University and other educational institutions that provide significant employment.

Columbus’s top job prospects are mostly those dealing with information technology and healthcare. According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, Columbus’s education and health services industry employed 111,600 people in June 2008, an increase of 2.2 percent over last year. The city’s information industry employed 18,400 people in June 2008, a decrease of 2.6 percent compared to last year.

Finding an Accounting Internship

Many colleges require that accounting majors take part in an internship program. Although this does give some students some real work experience, if you desire to be competitive in the job market you should consider going the extra mile.

The best way to do this is to either select an extended accounting internship or pad your resume by participating in a second program of your own volition. By making taking either measures you show employers that you are not only more dedicate, but that you also have more experience than other applicants who chose an internship only to fulfill the minimum requirements for graduation.

LinkedIn Co-Founder Eric Ly Joins Wellington Partners

Eric Ly, co-founder of LinkedIn and the emerging Presdo, has agreed to partner with Wellington Partners to help the company develop a stronger presence in the U.S.

The Munich- and London-based venture capital firm invests in the technology and life science industries. Eric Ly will be working with General Partner Eric Archambeau, who previously worked at Benchmark Capital and Atlas Venture.

For the two days a month that Ly is committed to Wellington he will be focusing on social media and social networking.

Ly’s professional portfolio includes Presdo, a simple online scheduling assistant that Lee began back in April 2006, and LinkedIn, the professional networking site that was recently valued at $1 billion.

Crederity Debuts Suite of Fact-Checking Tools

Crederity, a full-service pre- and post-employment screening provider, recently launched their new suite of fact-checking tools available for Human Resources or recruiting firms outsourcing the verification of candidates’ credentials.

Crederity can verify a candidate’s visa status, legal employment eligibility status, addresses, national security risk status, criminal status, retail incidents, bankruptcies, liens, civil judgments, online reputation and feedback, and social network status.

Taleo’s Acquisition of Vurv Completed

Taleo, a provider of on-demand talent management solutions, has announced the completion of its acquisition of Vurv Technology, a Jacksonville-based company also specializing in talent management software.

“The addition of Vurv’s employees, products and domain expertise will enable us to enhance our solutions for customers, increase efficiencies and significantly expand our opportunities for growth,” said Michael Gregoire, Chairman and CEO of Taleo. “This acquisition reinforces our leadership position and commitment to delivering continued innovation to our growing customer base. The combined power of Taleo and Vurv will allow customers to better leverage the benefits of a unified talent management platform, providing a cohesive view of recruiting, performance, succession, and compensation to drive improved business results.

Taleo first announced it was acquiring Vurv on May 6. The completion of the acquisition comes after Vurv laid off 79 employees mid-June.

The combined companies serve over 3,400 customers around the world, including 48 of the Fortune 100, and more than 2,800 small and medium-sized businesses.

OfficeBook Application on Facebook Checks for Good Karma

A new application on the social networking site Facebook is allowing users to seek out companies that match their culture and values.

The OfficeBook application, created by the three people at Leaders 2020 Inc. who were frustrated by the inability of job seekers to uncover company culture through traditional means of job searching, has begun a fan club of about 500 users on Facebook since its debut last month.

Midwest, Northeast Companies Closing Doors to New Hires in Q3

midwestthumb.jpgA recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive in partnership with Careerbuilder and USA TODAY forecasts a hiring decline in the third quarter most prominent in the Midwest and Northeast regions. Results suggest the recruiting slump was brought on by a mixture of lethargic economic growth, high oil prices, and subdued consumer spending.

About 2,900 hiring managers and HR reps and 7,900 workers in private sector companies responded to the survey, which was conducted May 22 through June 13.
