2008 Executive Survey Finds Severe Job Cuts to be Made This Year

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Career Protection’s Annual 2008 Layoffs Forecast paints an ugly picture of cuts in jobs for this upcoming year. Over 1,375 corporate executives nationwide completed the confidential annual survey regarding workforce reduction plans conducted by the employment law and human resources experts of CareerProtection.com this month (Survey conducted January 2-25, 2008).

“This is our worst layoff forecast in the past five years for employees, as corporations appear ready to slash staff and layoff workers,” says Kirk Nemer, J.D., SPHR, President and CEO of Career Protection®.

“The only good news provided by Executives and Senior Vice Presidents in our survey was that companies were planning to provide severance pay during these difficult and stressful times,” Nemer stated. “However, it appears the severance packages will not be as generous in their severance pay as they have been in the recent past.” Nemer added that, “Employees should negotiate their severance package offers as they’re not a ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ situation. Companies will still require employees to execute a General Release of Legal Claims in exchange for receiving a severance package, so companies will negotiate its terms to obtain one from employees.”

Career Protection has been inundated this month with telephone calls from employees at Bear Stearns, Chrysler, Citigroup, Covidien Healthcare, Ford, GM, Indy Mac and Sprint Nextel, who have announced plans for reductions-in-force in January.

Turning Your Summer Internship Into A Job Offer

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Do Your Part
You may be only a summer intern, but that shouldn’t stop you from acting like an regular employee. Get to work on time and finish up projects before you leave the office. Don’t leave early unless it’s very urgent and don’t take extra liberties. Resist the temptation to join the group of people who take their jobs for granted. Don’t talk on your cell phone at work or take long lunch breaks, unless you have cleared it with your supervisor first. Above all, avoid office politics and don’t engage in office gossip.

If you prove your worth in the office and behave like a valued employee then everyone will appreciate you and your work. This in turn will compel management to consider you for a full time job.

Be Generous And Pay Your Dues
Generosity pays – so act like an employee and take extra assignments and tasks to showcase your skills. Sometimes you may have to take a less glamorous job during your internship, but do not neglect your work and do that work with full sincerity.

Itzbig Named a Most Promising Startup

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Itzbig has been named to American Venture magazine’s list of 2008’s Most Promising Startups.

n its entry on itzbig, American Venture wrote that the company is “the technology leader in online recruiting,” adding that “itzbig is the first interactive network to allow working professionals to save time while safely exploring career opportunities. By focusing on quality and efficiency, the company’s innovative approach matches the quiet working professional with the appropriate position at the itzbig client.”

Jim McGovern, the CEO of itzbig, noted that “it is a tremendous honor to be recognized by a prestigious third party, such as American Venture. Our employees have worked very hard to create a value proposition that is unique and effective in the online recruiting industry.”

That value proposition has resonated with dozens of companies in Texas where itzbig launched in 2007.

“itzbig is different in that it allows us to find high-performing employees who would otherwise not feel comfortable exploring jobs on the Internet,” said Gary Thompson of Kimbia Software, Inc. “itzbig is attractive to these candidates because it offers privacy, security, and anonymity as well as the ability to see exactly how they match up against the specific job opportunity.”

“We were using more traditional recruiting methods for hiring a developer when we decided to go with itzbig. Immediately, we found what we were looking for. There’s no reason to go back to the old way of hiring new employees.”

Joel Cheesman, one of the most widely-read bloggers on emerging recruitment issues in the world, added that itzbig had it right from the start.

“Founders Jim Hammock and Hank Stringer are industry veterans who launched Hire.com almost a decade ago,” said Cheesman. “Add that experience with founder Asad Khan’s supply chain industry expertise and you have a winning combination that can reshape the recruiting industry.”

“This is a company that has plotted its growth in a very responsible way, expanding step-by-step out of its home state and doing its best to ensure both employers and applicants have an opportunity to connect in a meaningful way. itzbig has a sound strategy and is gaining momentum with some of the tech industry’s most dynamic employers.”

Survey on Video Resumes – Length Does Matter

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

HireMeNow.com, an online temporary and contract employment marketplace, announced today some formidable survey results indicating the age of video resumes has arrived, with more than 4 out of 5 hiring managers willing to view a video resume.

Three hundred human resource and business managers were surveyed in December 2007, and of them, 83 percent indicated they were willing to view a video resume as a part of the hiring process. Sixty-three percent immediately responded yes, and, of the remaining 37 percent who initially said no, maybe or don’t know, 55 percent indicated they likely would view a video resume after viewing a satisfactory written resume. That’s a total of 83 percent of respondents whose hiring decision could be impacted by receiving and viewing a video resume. And, while many respondents had not actually seen a video resume yet, only one respondent who had seen a video resume indicated she would not view a video resume again.

Millennials are Unmanageable, High Maintenance, and Have a False Sense of Entitlement

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Interesting (and seemingly bitter) blog article at Hodes Q Trac about Gen Y / Millennial workers. The author, Jasmine Flowers, takes issue with stereotypes of this generation as being flip flop wearing, illiterate, hypersensitive, and unable to think critically.

Perhaps I’m biased but my experience with Millennials has been quite the opposite. For example, I find them to be incredibly literate but in a different way than Boomers or Gen X’ers. Millennials have an incredible ability to converse through cell phone text messaging and instant messaging with several and even dozens of people simultaneously. How can someone who regularly converses in writing like that with so many people be accused of being illiterate?

Are they hypersensitive? Are they unable to think critically? Sometimes, sure. But who wasn’t at the age of twenty?

Do they wear flip flops too often? Well, yeah. But even with that issue I find it amusing that foot attire criticism is being leveled by the very Boomers and Gen X who absolutely adored such fashion statements as super wide ties, acid washed jeans, bell bottoms, burning bras, and leisure suits.
